A Quick Glimpse of Different Types of Cryogenic Valves

As the name suggests, these valves are used in very cold applications like industries dealing with CNG or LNG. These valves are very helpful in storing gases stored under immense pressure and cold temperatures and also to safely transport them from one place to another. One crucial factor making them special is their ability to work efficiently at very low temperatures and under high pressure. These function effectively enough to open the valve if the pressure increases within and once the pressure comes down to workable limits, these are sealed again.

Before we know more about these, it is important to know about various types of Cryogenic Valves made to defined specifications:

Globe valves: These are known such because of their shape and have an internal movable disc rotating 90o to its coordinated body seat. Globe valves offer greater reliability in the longer term but are susceptible to moisture especially when the flow rate is immense.

Gate valves: In this, a wedge-shaped obturator is used swinging parallel to the mating body seat. They offer good flow characteristics but their performance is hampered by wear and tear.

Ball valves: If the valves are required for an unrestricted flow path, these are the most suitable ones to be used. These have comparatively better flow characteristics than that offered by the globe valves. One of the drawbacks of these valves is that these are prone to wear and tear especially along the seals and ball.

These are a few of the Cryogenic Valves used in the industry and should be picked up wisely. Apart from this, there are some other varieties like the top entry ball valves and butterfly valves facilitating different applications.
